Kate doesn't run from the CLI, so it wouldn't be very useful for editing my servers' config files. Vim does, and is.

I never tried Kate but I do like the way Kwrite color-codes certain keywords in my Java code (for example, variable types [such as String or int] turn blue, and comments turn gray), and can collapse functions to one line. Makes things much easier to read!

All that pesky memory getting you down? Don't worry, get Kate, and suck it all away! With KDE, a single login will soon put all that unused RAM to no use whatsoever. Satisfaction guaranteed!

All I have to say is vi. It's always usually available when no other editor is. Learn it, use it, live with it... it'd smack kate around like the bitch she is..
