GNU Vs. Patents

Does GNU licensing protect linux and people that want to develop under GNU GPL or other GNU licenses, or are software patents going to bring the end to software development as we know it? Will linux still exist even after these ridiculous software patents?

Have a read at www.gnu.org to learn all about the GPL and Free Software, etc.

Also moving to General, not a Linux technical question, so its more suitable here.
