Microsoft's main problem is that their search has to at least be as good as Google's. While they're playing catch up, Google are onto the next innovation. Personally, I think that this sort of thing could be the undoing of Microsoft.

Let's hope so! I thought it was a very interesting article. Bill hates being second best. Right now I'm reading the book "Barbarians Led By Bill Gates" right now which covers M$ and their attempts to stomp out competition like Netscape. (Yes it's an older book (1998), but MS tactics haven't changed much...) Very good read so far. Highly Recommended!

I see a Micro$oft vs Google wrestling match in next season's tv schedule.

Perhaps even a new reality show. Geeks Island?

Ya, by the time longhorn gets released, it might already be outdated..........alot of people are tired of IE and it's security holes , and they are making the switch to other browsers.............

I used Yahoo, Excite, others before Google came out and loved it because it had a simple interface and no adds. After many years it has not changed... I just hope Google does not change their philosophy over the battle with msn search, or fall out all together like NS did...

I think gmail is great and love when they added the image search, however, there starting to add many other searches and applications that are just going to bog down the service...

wow, billy targeted google because they were hiring software people?

O NO BILL!, Septic Sewage Removal INC. is hiring software engineers, fast, rally m$, prepare the lawyers!, ready the integrators!, fast, stomp them out before they have a chance to threaten your monopoly on shitware!

really tho, the more i hear about m$, the sadder they seem. But all in all, google only has a chance because of antitrust suits, if there were non, m$ would out integrate google, and turn shorthorn into a encyclopedia for spamers to read of you, off your computer.

Agreed, but I'd rather not have any 'superpowers' in the software world. Personally, I'd be perfectly happy to see the OS market split 25% Windows, 25% Mac OS, %25 Linux, and 25% Misc. Other. That would force everyone to adhere to standards and write cross-platform code.

Now you put it that way, yes I agree. I would also prefer a split market. There is always something dark about superpowers, and the world would be better off without them.

Wishfull thinking... I don't think humans are at that level yet. There will always be someone that wants to be that 26% It's seems to be that way with everything, not just OS's and the Computer market...

unless the superpower is freedom-based... the GPL license, for example, has a nice side-effect of keeping vendors in check (at least the big ones)... so even if, say, RedHat someday became the most powerful software company in the world, they'd still be limited by the GPL (as long as they are using GPL-licensed software)... the GPL is a very effective anti-monopoly tool... personally i wouldn't see a free software company with a market percentage of microsoft proportions as such an evil thing - however, the nature of free software licenses makes that something very unlikely, to say the least... but still, i look forward to a day when free software makes-up 51% of the software market worldwide...

yeah, i don't think any company would want to limit themselves to a certain percentage - in a way, that would be quite ridiculous... it's one of those things that sounds nice but makes absoloutley no sense in the real-world... just because companies like microsoft use bad business practices doesn't mean that business in itself is bad... but either way, in the end the market share companies get isn't determined by the companies themselves - it's determined by people's wallets - regardless of what kinda market share the companies were hoping to grab...
