What nobody understands is that half of that cost has nothing to do the planes
half the cost of a government contract goes to buying military recruits we don't
have a draft now because conscription has been privatized out to the white slave trade
that's why there are government contracts for $400 hammers and $6000 toilet seats
it's also how government they get away with looks like there riping off the government
there not there selling human lives to the government not what's on the contract

Pretty much this! If you count the cost to make an airplane without all the unnecessary bits, can probably be quite cheap. Airplanes have been here for decades, just like cars, it isn't actually that of advanced engineering - well compared to a car an airplane is more complex, but even a car - you have an engine, wheels, frame, seats, doors and windows, that material alone should not cost that much.

It takes a lot of time and money to certify an airplane to comply with all the FAA requirements. Besides the hammer and toilet seat any part has to work from -65 to +65 deg C and survive crash loads on the order of 10Gs (military planes are higher). One of the more spectacular tests is bending a wing to complete failure.
We tend to take most things for granted these days IMHO. We expect our cell phones to just work anywhere anytime. We expect the light to illuminate when we turn on the wall switch, water to run when we turn on the faucet 24/7 without knowing or caring how it works or what it took to get it to where we want it.
