Digital sound system

My TV has a optical jack to hook up a digital sound system.

The manual has no details on that jack.

I would like to hook up some external speakers to hear better sound that those cheapie internal speakers.

What kind of digital sound system would I need ?

A stereo or sound bar that has optical inputs. It is a fiber optic connection versus analog RCA or HDMI digital. I think the official name is TOSLINK.

Have you checked the TV manufacturer's website for a manual and specifications?

I've had good luck finding this type of information in that manner. That's how I got the full manuals for my motherboards, my printer, and my cellphone, among others.

I have the full manual.

So far, I have only found soundbars.

I prefer a system with separate right and left speakers.

I will continue my search.

Keep us updated.

Aside: It's a lousy manual if it doesn't tell you how to use all the features.

If you just want to hook up two speakers, you can buy a digital-to-analogue adapter. I personally own this one:

This is close to what I am looking for.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Denon-AVR-88...UAAOSw-FZXj-zU

Postage is high because it weighs 25 lbs.

I will check Fry's and see if they have something similar.

I regret selling four high quality speakers in a garage sale. :-)

It was that or have no home.

But you can't keep everything.

If it is an optical interface it is likely S/PDIF and this might help to understand it's uses

It's a option but too expensive at $500.

I use something very similar to connect my powered monitors (Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 pro-actives in my case) to my PC without any annoying ground-loop effects present using a direct connection.

Just bought this to hookup this to my TV at home.

My reciever/amplifiers come from goodwill/salvation army for a few bucks. Same for speakers.

If you want 5.1 that's going to be either expensive or junk but if you're willing to try hi-end 2.1 (2 x mids/tweets, 1 x subwoofer) you can get pretty damned awesome sound out of

--- Klipsch Powered PreoMedia --- for slightly more than $120 USD

and if you are stuck with only a digital optical interface (SPDIF) an adapter to normal stereo phono jack(s) is an additional $30-$90 USD, difference depending mostly on extra features

Logitech's clone is decent as well and slightly cheaper. Oddly enough, since their other speakers are mostly junk, Labtec makes a decent powered 2.1 for around $50 USD

Altec Lansing makes a variety of decent-to-awesome powered systems

JBL 2.1 stuff looks weirdly futuristic and is only decent (not great as one would expect from a long-standing leader) and though they do offer some lower-priced 5.1 junk, it starts getting REALLY awesome around $400 USD. example - 5.1 with BluRay and actual Receiver, DLNA eliminates need for most adapters --- JBL 5.1 Home Theater

I don't think you need the DAC since that receiver has optical in? You would just plug an optical toslink cable between the TV's optical out and the receiver's optical in.

I understand where you are coming from. My post was a general style of post. Since my reciever is not exactly what fixit posted. That was why I mentioned goodwill and salvation army.

My recievers are older generation vs what fixit posted. I am just going to use the digital to analogue adapter as a input device to my old reciever. Like turntable or aux input in the back.

Then control tv volume with the receiver by hand.
