Curiosity ... am I the only [OS/X] user who actually looks at logs?

Heh ...

I guess that, in these "modern" times, it must be considered fairly comical that you would actually look "behind the scenes" at the system-logs which your computer (still ...) dutifully keeps, and (very innocently??) wonder: "what the hell is going on here?!?!"

As in: "What t'hell happened to my personal(?!) computer?"

Go ahead. Look at the log-directories and see if you can explain how you actually "approved of" 1/10th of what is, today, "going on here."

I dread to think what I'd find wading through the logs, it's bad enough trying to figure out what's going on in the here and now with a "modern" OS!

My first PC ran Mandrake Linux. By the time I'd finished fixing it, there were a total of 31 processes running when I was logged in with a graphical desktop. If I then ran ps -A I could have told you what each of the 33 processes on the list did.

My current Wheezy box has over two hundred processes before I even run anything useful - and I've no idea why.

A quick check shows 117 in CentOS. I certainly don't know what they all do, and finding out is not always enlightening. Are pickup and qmgr being used for some vital purpose, or are they just sitting there?
