Thumbs down

So I got a new laptop (after giving my first t my nephew last “X-mas.”) It's refurbished\cheep and came with win7pro; almost a week now and I have 8 other operating systems installed along side or virtual machines(VMs)… more than likely a coincidence that the win10 “free” upgrade popped up just after installing GRUB? For now (still with its original harddrve) I will try them out, 10 soon, have 8.1 in a VM it's faster than 7 but still too slow out of the box (no pun or fun!) Over all experiences point to any number of distros: faster, safer-ish, liberating and more stable off the bat. Planning an SSD with no winblow$!

M$ Windows is a major piece of sh*t! It should be totally obliterated from the face of the earth.

Replace "Windows" with "Metro", "NTFS", "registry", and "Windows 'Security Essentials'" and that's more or less where I stand. Windows can be fixed, but Micro$oft is too lazy to update 20 year old software. Quite a lot could be fixed by giving Windows the ability to use a journaled filesystem (such as ext4). More could be fixed by rethinking the registry to make it less fallible and prone to corruption/misinformation. A good security module baked into the kernel could solve a lot of issues. Bringing the desktop to the phone instead of the phone to the desktop. All the little things are just wrong and I guarantee they will never be fixed.

Oh, and the "audits"...my gosh don't get me started...

Thought "activation" was supposed to take care of that. Doughheads.

I really hope Canonical doesn't fall into this pitfall.

microsoft is a multi-billion dollar company. the changes you are proposing would result in million$ (billion$) of r&d. windows is already 80% of the desktop market. why go thru all that wasted time money and effort just to win an insignificant 5% more ?

Not to mention that some of us that already use something else most likely would not switch to them even if they made those changes. I know I wouldn't use windoze even if it was free.

And that's more or less the conclusion I came to, then I ditched Windows completely and only use Linux (or really anything that's not Windows).

I've never bought anything windoze. I build my own puters so that I don't have to pay for it that way either. Basically, I have zero use for windoze. If Microsoft closed its doors tomorrow, I'd hear about it on the news I guess.

An anti-monopoly law would be nice! But, what would .gov++ do?

After the 8/10 fiasco, I don't think there is any fixing Windows

NTFS is a journaling filesystem.

Ah, my bad. But, wait...why do Windows users need to defrag so often?? I got the impression Linux didn't need it because of FS journaling. And indexing? Why?? Either way, there is a major performance difference between NTFS and ext4. There's nothing stopping Microsoft from adopting a superior filesystem except willpower. And of course that won't happen until they start losing money.

I like how a friend of mine put it:
http://s27.postimg.org/j5rww0f7n/Scr...1_09_17_01.jpg

Just replace IE with Windows and Firefox with Linux. It's just how Microsoft rolls. Unfortunately.
