I see that MSI and Asus make barebone laptops, but where do I buy they barebones? I can see info about the laptops on their sites, but can't find a way to buy them.
I think it would be cool to buy your own CPU, mem, HD, etc.
Also, do they make intel core 2 duo for laptops yet? I know they got the regular core and core duos.
I can never find a laptop that has everthing I want. Thinkpads are s'pose to be nice, but too pricey, and heavy.
I want to to be light, (6 and less lbs), 14" screen (15 and up makes the laptop too big), have a trackpad, and can pick me own componets from newegg.
Although I have not done this myself it sounds like a fun project.
I suspect that the overall savings may not be that much (given that you will not have the bulk buying power of the traditional laptop brands), but it would be nice to have the level of finite control over the project.
I would take a look at this story, and the associated links to sites where you can buy barebones laptops and other components.
Wow. I choosed the lightest one (ASUS Z33AE)
Celeron M 1.6GHz
512MB DDR2 400
40GB slim 5400RPM HD
(Ill dual boot xp home and linux)
XP home
CD-RW+DVD-ROM (its slim, but not sure the outer cover will fit)
Eternal wifi G minipci card
and not including S&H, I'm at $965.92!
Hey, I got xp and linux running on a celeron 533mhz and 160mb ram, and it runs ok.
If I picked the thinest and lightest laptop from IBM or someplace, I'd be well over $1000.
Not to mention, looks like being fun, this would be to make your own custom laptop.
I'm totally gonna do this when I'm gonna get a laptop.
