A little Microsoft bashing

Hey guys I was just reading this artical

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10...horn_is_going/

And Bill is talking about security and says:

"It is also fixing problems much faster than it used to. Gates: "We've gone from little over 40 hours on average to 24 hours. With Linux, that would be a couple of weeks on average."

What do you guys reakon?? I thought that linux security problems were generally sorted quicker than that.

I am not REALLY security conscious.

Hmmm well the thing was I am sure I was reading about lots of people complaining how it had taken Microsoft a year to make some really important security fixes.

Still doesn´t leave me knowing how fast security holes a fixed for linux though.

I, for one, wonder why Microsoft patches vulnerabilities at all. According to them, security problems are never exploited until the patch is released.

the flaw is discovered, the patch prepared, the anouncement made

the important thing here is this:

if the flaw isn't announced until the patch is ready, the time in which people can exploit the flaw is kept to a minimum

if M$ announce a hole in IE and then leave it for a few weeks till the patch is ready, then there is time for that flaw to be found and exploited

the biggest problem is obviously those who don't patch at all

(my son (shakes head in utter disbelief) recently admitted to running his XP box on broadband with no firewall and no antivirus and no patches)
I didn't know whether to laugh or weep.
Suffice to say he found half a dozen viruses and 8 trojans (dad, what's a trojan? is it serious? dad, where's all this porn come from? why can't I delete it?")
Am trying to persuade him to move to Linux! (But he's into sound engineering and needs winmess to run various well known software titles.)

ROTFL

since when is Bill Gates an expert on anything other than making a quick buck off hard working but not so bright (when it comes to computers) people. what the fsck does he know about computers or software other than how to do the shittiest job possible. the arrogance of that man, i don't know who is worse Bill Gates or George Bush.

in any event, Windows has monthly patches, always has, always will. the idiot said it himself "Windows have some 'critical' errors that we simply cannot fix"

with Linux, when they do manage to find some tiny crack in the seems a posting is sent immediately and everybody contacts their Linux distributor and downloads at their leisure. typically is some arcane feature in some occasionally used software and not a 'critical' error in the Kernal itself. and updates might happen once or twice a year. at that rate, the Linux Kernel itself is constantly evolving (to add more and more features) so it's really a moot point.

it's too bad their really isn't a God that can zap people with a bolt of lightening when they lie... proof there isn't a God is that people like Bill Gates, George Bush and Bin Ladin actually walk (or 'walked' as loud-mouth Bin laden is probably dead) the earth.....

John Kerry for President and Linux forever!

The thing is even worse then you think. I've recently made a fresh install of Windows 2000. I thought it would be ok to configure the Internet during installation, since I should go directly to Windows Update and grab the latest service pack. Guess what? When I first booted into Windows 2000 (note, I've no firewall and I have not even open Internet Explorer or anything, just an ordinary boot), a message pop up in my screen, more or less saying "Your computer is not secure, with the same ease of this pop-up, a hacker could invade your computer. Click here to learn how to make your computer safer". No kidding guys. Scared, I tried to close that and do something to increase security, unplug the cords should not be a solution because I wanted the service packs, so I don't remember the address that poped up on my screen. After that, svchost.exe kept crashing and crashing. I simply could not Update the System. Every time that svchost.exe crashed, I had to reboot because the Windows update or any install shield-like would not run. Solution: After a long time trying to install adaware (that I had in a CD from a Magazine) and Sygate Personal Firewall (also from a magazine) I could set up the firewall and delete the spywares... about 8 of them were found. Still keep in mind that I did not open anything yet but Internet Explorer (to when I clicked on Windows Update). One of them could not be deleted by Adaware and it was running as a service. Task Manager could not kill the service, so I used a Win98 boot disk and killed the spyware from DOS.... Then, and only then I got service pack 4 and all updates... No kidding...

If it was not for games, I would stay away from this garbage windows is 4EVER....

Gates told reporters that Microsoft won't stop the development of its browser Internet Explorer. Critics complain that Microsoft has failed to keep pace with browser standards despite repeated pleadings and that development in general has slowed to a glacial pace.

"How could we ignore the browser?," Gates responded. 'The Explorer is fully integrated with the operating system, take it away and the OS grinds to a halt. When you call up Help, you're using the browser. In Office 2003 instead of going to the local files, the browser will go online and fetch the latest documents."
I'm thinking gates is missing the pointy!, IE and explorer are different programs!, IE they bough ans use as there default web browser, this is what people want M$ to improve to keep up to standards (a few years and no new version!)

explorer was M$'s half-crackedup-ass attempt at a web browser, as i recall a article saying it didn't work out, so they made it into there desktop/file manager! (umm, what idiot would take a program that barley works and makes it into a desktop manager!!!!!, the program that used most in Windows!@)

Quote:
From now on, Microsoft will install these patches automatically. And it will bring the size of the patches down to satisfactory portions. "We used to send megabytes of software to fix a 20 byte file," Gates said.

Gates is optimistic about meeting the challenge of the new security threats, he told reporters. "We have to. We invented personal computing. It is the best tool of empowerment there has ever been. If there is anything that clouds that picture, we need to fix it." ®
i dono about you guys, but having things installed on my computer without my knowledge seems more like spy/add ware to me

and o yea
to gates: THE PROBLEM IS M$, FIX IT BY MAKING GOOD SOFTWARE FOR ONCE, OR AT LEAST STOP KILLING SUPERIOR PRODUCTS !

Wow, I think Gates needs a shovel to dig him out of all the crap that he's talking...lol. I'll admit I'm in no way an experienced Linux end-user. But I know for sure there are loads of hackers out there, I know a few, that exploit the vulnerabilities in IE, Outlook, etc etc, well before any patch is released. The only reason Old Billy says Linux patches take much longer is becuz he trying to cover his ass on why it takes MS so long to deploy patches, and why there's so many of them.
