X Window system fails when starting anaconda installer
I have ATI X550 graphic card on nForce 4 motherboard with Athlon 64. I tried to install Fedora 5 64, but it can't start anaconda installer in graphical mode, so it turns to text mode. That was OK, but after booting it does not start X server and I'm stuck in bash.
Is there any chance to start gnome from bash?
Please help. I’m desperate.
You could try 'startx' to start the X server from a shell, but unfortunately if X didn't start the first time when it booted, you've probably got an unsupported video card and it won't work the second time either. Still might be worth a try, though.
I am also having this problem. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT card on an nForce 4 motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 CPU. I performed a successful install with the text-based installer and I haven't been able to start the X server properly.
I booted up my Slackware 10 system which I used before I upgraded my machine over a year ago and it boots fine, so I stole the xorg.conf from it and tried modifying Fedora's xorg accordingly and installing the nvidia drivers with yum. I've failed at this but I believe I managed to mess up the kernel and gnome, so I'm going to try reinstalling again soon. If I have any luck I'll post it here. Hopefully someone can find a solution to this problem.
I also have a ATI X550 Radeon, but on Intel mobo. But still the same problem with FC5 install. After console login (bash) I ran "setup" from root and then went to the X Configuration tool (at the bottom of the menu). This also first has a problem with the configuration on both displays (twice) and then it automatically switches over to a VESA compliant driver which works OK. Then you can quit and do a "startx". I am still looking for a better setup.
what does fedora say about this? it has ban an unbelievably common problem and i have looked for weeks for a fix and cant find one. i am getting agitated. i want to buy redhat enterprise server, but i am concerned it will have the same issue
Now my FC5 Dvd just all of sudden gets I/O error at the end. I got my main pc back up which originally ran with a r9250 pro / r9200 pro . upgraded my gfx to a x1600 pro 512mb agp and it installed but wrong resolutions now it wont even install at the last step when its suppose to be isntalling i did ctrl alt f3 then f4 in either 1 i saw it siad I/O error once. and im like o wow gotta redownload the dvd
Sorry folks but I have not yet tried these for my x550 but have you tried the xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.23.7-4.lvn5 from FC (update?) or
fglrx_6_8_0-8.24.8-1.i386.rpm from https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27 ?
That is if the VESA compliant driver is not good enough.
RobNyc: Re faulty ISO: This is the wrong thread but you could just "reget" the last part (by cutting it off) of the iso (with ftp from a mirror that supports it or with a download manager)
I finally found a solution for this problem:
After installing Fedora (in text mode, of course), you need to login as root. Then, start display configuration by typing system-config-dispay. This program will try to start X and it will do that with old settings. In the configuration window set the resolution and colors; DO NOT CHANGE DISPLAY DRIVER. Click OK and you are back in terminal. Now you can start X server with startx command.
Next thing to do is to set default runlevel to avoid using startx every time you boot linux. To do this, you need to change file /etc/inittab. Open it in editor and find a section named Default Runlevel (it should at the top). Change ranlevel to 5 by changing line beneath comments to id:5:initdefault:. Next time you boot linux it will start X server automatically.
I have also installed ATI driver but it is useless.
