Instalation on external Harddrive?

Hello,

I have been trying a few distros and I am currently ready to switch to Fedora. But for Christmas I got a 100gig external Harddrive (Maxtor 7200rpm connects through a usb port) is there anyway to install Fedora on this and not the one that is in my computer? I have tried a few times and again and again lost everything on my computer because it constantly writes it to the internal hard drive.

Can anyone help me?
