My laptop m/b has a built-in ATI, and I had to install FC6 in "console" mode. (ATI, like most display chip sets, supports a simple VT100 -- i.e., console -- mode with no driver installed.) It went quite well, with no problems. Navigating without a "mouse" for an installation is quite easy. (Non-graphical installation is an install option, I seem to remember it was "F2" to get the list, but it been a while. The key to press for the option list is on the first screen.)
Then I added the livna repository to /etc/yum/repos.d/, and installed the driver from there.
As to why there is no ATI driver in the distribution, it would violate Fedora's "only FOSS programs in the distribution" policy, since Raedon will not release their driver in anything other than a binary blob.
<edit>
By the way, the Fedora install selected the i586 kernel for my AMD processor instead of the i686 version. This caused several problems before I noticed that the wrong kernel was installed and replaced it with the correct one.
Just a "heads-up," which may not be relevant for your install.
