Question FC1 installation stops when working with packages

A couple of weeks ago I decided to go for linux. I've chosen Fedora. I purchased the book "linux for non-geeks", which comes with FC1. The week before that I acquired FC3. But I'm taking the advice in the book and starting out with FC1. My pc is running an AMD K-6 450 cpu and 512 mb of ram with a known 10gig hard drive and an unknown amount of space on a second hard drive. Things go pretty well excpt for not knowing my off-brand monitor and there is no acknowledgement of my USB mouse. Then I get to the package reading and it seems to take very long, then I get the error that Fedora doesn't support my machine or the other way around.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

thanks

Eileen
