Hi everybody,
short introduction: I am from germany, running linux since quite a while at home (started with Slackware in the 90th).
Now I want to convert my very old fedora core 10 into a virtual machine, and I got to the point, where I don't know anymore, how to set a static IP in this VM.
Obviously udev generates an eth1 (besides lo0 and pan0):
2: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN qlen 1000
link/ether 00:0c:29:e0:8d:08 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.178.131/16 brd 192.168.255.255 scope global eth1
Running "Network Configuration" on the gui I just see an eth0 in the devices tab, which is inactive and the activate-Button is grey. In the Hardware-Tab I see pan0 and eth1.
You can assign a static IP to this eth0 and the configuration is also written to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, but restarting network or rebooting does not have any effect. Interestingly I do not find a ifcfg-eth1 in this directory and creating one with static entries does not help either.
In "Network Configuration" I also tried to copy eth0 and assign it to eth1 with the same mac-address as eth1, but I get this error:
# service network restart
Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up interface eth0: Device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.
[FAILED]
udev:
# cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
# Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE] (rule written by anaconda)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:0c:29:df:c2:aa", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"
# PCI device 0x1022:0x2000 (pcnet32)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:0c:29:dd:1c:b3", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1"
# PCI device 0x1022:0x2000 (pcnet32)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:0c:29:e0:8d:08", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1"
To be honest, I have no idea, where the system gets the info, that eth1 is the interface to be used and I do not know where to change it to be a static address.
Any help is appreciated
