i have a netgear router attached to a cable modem. then two comps #1 with XP and #2 with FC5 are attached to that router with earthnet cables.
how can we share files and folders on both comps in this small home setup.Printer is attached to the #2 comp.
Pls explain stepbystep as i have just install FC 5 on the #2 comp.
From the desktop in Gnone, go to System>Aministration>Samba
From there, just follow the dialogue to add the folders you want to share with the windows machine. On the windows, machine, add the network address from the networking in the Control Panel.
For the printer, when you add the printger to your Linux box you will be asked if you want to share the printer on the network. Then, you will have to add the printer to your Windows machine (including the driver) as a NETWORK printer. The windows machine should find it during set up. All Network sharing from Linux to Windows is configured in Samba.

hi bob
i ve connected a linux FC5 PC in LAN. i also want to open shared xp files in this system.
recently i have installed FC5 with this partioning
/boot 100MB
SWAP 1024MB
/ rest of 40 gb hdd.
i tried to go to System>Aministration>Samba but there is no option for Samba in Administration.
The correct route is (in Gnome, at the top of the screen) System>Administration>Server Settings>Samaba. The dialogue there will guide you. In windows, you simply right click the folder you want to share, and move to share and click it. The folder should then be displayed with a hand (or a pair of hands, can't remember, don't use windows much any more) holding the folder indicating that it is shared on the network and can be viewed by other computers.
In FC5, go to places (again at the top of the screen) and move down to connect to server. From there, choose Windows Share as the type of connection, and then enter the IP address of the windows machine. This will put an icon on your desktop which you can click on to open the shared folders in windows.
In windows, go to My Network Places and your shared folders from FC5 should be displayed.
It should look something like this: (only an example)
Server: 192.168.2.0
Optional Information:
You do not need to fill anything else out here. When you configured the windows folders to share them, they should show up when you open the windows share on the FC5 desk top.
Is the windows machine recognizing the FC5 machine?
