What is stage2.img

In the images directory there are 2 files-
stage2.img & minstg2.img. What is the purpose
of these files? I used to think they contained
the base system but now I`m not so sure.

It's a cramfs file which has the anaconda installer.

Just so everyone knows what you're talking about, it's the images folder on cd1 or at a web site like this...
