Using HP Officejet 5510 on a linux print server

Hello all..

I've posted on this subject before (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...fficejet+5510), but I'd like to post again with a somewhat clearer statement of the problem.

My goal is to set up my HP OfficeJet 5510 multifunction printer as a network printer accessible to anybody on my network. I have three machines on my network. They are:

"Tony" (my computer) - dual boot Fedora core 3 and XP Home
"Server" - My server running fedora core 4
"Tina" - my wife's XP home machine (connected via wireless)

My printer would be connected to the server, since it is up and running 24/7. I want to make the printer available to the XP machines. I have done so using samba. My smb.conf file looks like:

[global]
workgroup = Mshome
os level = 20
server string = FC3
security = share
printcap name = /etc/printcap
load printers = yes

[Common]
guest account = tony
path = /data/Common
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
write list = tony,tina,guest

[Programs]
guest account = tony
path = /mnt/backup/Downloads/Programs/
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
write list = tony,tina,guest

[Drivers]
guest account = tony
path = /mnt/backup/Downloads/Drivers/
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
write list = tony,tina,guest

[Web]
guest account = tony
path = /var/www/html
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
write list = tony,tina,guest

[Ghost]
guest account = tony
path = /mnt/backup/ghost
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
write list = tony,tina,guest

[Backups]
guest account = tony
path = /mnt/backup/Backups
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
write list = tony,tina,guest

[Printers]
comment = HP OfficeJet 5500
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
printable = yes
guest ok = yes
use client driver = yes
writeable = no
create mask = 0600

CUPS is also installed and appears to be working correctly. I can log into http://localhost:631 and see my admin page. My printer is identified and it shows me print jobs as I send them to the printer. I can print locally without problems. I can also scan using XSane.

The printer is visible to me from the XP network neighborhood. I can do a right-click and connect to it. I install the built-in XP driver (The one provided me by HP doesn't appear to work at all).The printer installs and I can open a printer dialog that shows me the status of the printer, what jobs have been sent, what the file size is and who the owner is. If I send a test page from XP, the job looks like it goes to the printer normally, and CUPS confirms reciept of the job. CUPS tells me that the job has printed successfully, but I get nothing printed out. No lights blink, no mechanical gyrations from the printer.. nothing.

Interestingly, If I go into CUPS and enable the banner and then send a test page from XP again, it prints the banner, but nothing after it. I guess I can take that as confirmation that network communications are good between the machines.

Could this possibly be a permissions issue on the server somewhere? If not, perhaps I've used the wrong driver?

I will gladly ship a case of beer to anyone who can resolve this one. Assuming you're old enough.

Regards

Tony Krishock

I would say you are running into some permission or password issue.
Check this link and try some of the options in it.
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO-9.html

Also check /etc/printcap references the printer.

I pulled this from one of the pay site help furoms.
1) Verify if u have access on the printer on host where samba server is :
# lpstat (no answer is good !)
NB: if not check /etc/cups/client.conf and after cupsd.conf for security access

2) Then if u want to use raw driver on samba server (and intalled driver on each windows client) , dont forget to put this line in smb.conf

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
use client driver = yes <----- THIS ONE
print command = lpr -P %p -o raw %s -r # using client side printer drivers.

3) If that doesnt still work see :
