scp stalls / segmentation error / reboots pc

Symptom: scp fails dramatically when copying files > about 100 MB.
Happens after the first 80 MB or so have been transferred.
Most often it simply stalls, usually freezing the system so that
I must hit the power button to shut it down.
Sometimes it exits to the shell and issues a segmentation
fault error message.
Occasionally in midtransfer the screen goes black and the machine
reboots.

System: MPC Transport T3100 laptop ~ 1 year old, 1 GB RAM,
80 GB drive mostly empty,
running FC6 installed last week. Kernel is 2.6.20-1.2948.fc6xen
