reinstalling the boot loader

I recently reinstalled winXP on my primary drive and have subsequently lost my boot loader.

I tried to reinstall it by putting Fedora Core 2: Disk 1 in and rebooting. it goes through the selection and the boot loader config and all that, but when it finishes (without allowing me to add any more packages) it gives me an error stating that I did not install a kernal and therefore the boot loader will not install.

How can I install a boot loader without reinstalling FC2?

or without being able to access my current FC2 installation?

or how can I access my current FC2 installation so I can install a new boot loader? (i tried using disk 1 in rescue mode to boot into a shell, and when i typed >grub-install it gave me the help screen for grub-install, but when i typed >grub-install /dev/hda it returned an error stating that grub was not found)

any suggestions appreciated

if need be, i can reinstall FC2, but id rather not.

if you're using lilo, you can restore the MBR using your current lilo.conf by booting your rescue cd and mouting your root partition, and then chrooting to it, something like this (for example):

mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/hd

lilo -r /mnt/hd

of course if you wanna edit the lilo.conf before you "burn" it you can also do so (after the mount):

vi /mnt/hd/etc/lilo.conf

dude, it's almost the same thing... i was just trying to give you the big picture as i don't use grub...

a simple search here at LQ would have given you all the info you need:

good luck...

i think the command u tried out after coming to the grub-prompt

u should have tried that from the bash prompt as well

#grub-install /dev/hda

or try using lilo

if u r not using lilo then lilo is saved as

/etc/lilo.conf.anaconda

copt that to /etc/lilo.conf and edit it and install lilo
#lilo

regards
