no init found

hello i have a tecra 8100 that i was running rfc2 on and it just froze completely so when i rebooted i get the message

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
audit(1110803108.4294965325;0); initialized
Red Hat nash version 3.5.22 starting
mount; error 6 mounting ext3
pivotroot; pivot_root(/sysroot,/sysroot/initrd) failed; 2
umount /initrd/proc failed; 2
Kernel panic; No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

i have looked around and found many different suggestions about what to do and tried a few of them but i keep getting the same error every time
can someone please help me!
thank you

edit

ok i have been rebooting trying root=/dev/hda0 and init=3 and things like that
i haven't SAVED any of the changes so they are just one time things but now when the system tries to boot without me editing anything it says error 2 mounting ext3
not error 6 like before so does anyone know what this means??

/dev/hda0 is invalid. Boot first CD into rescue mode and verify that your root partition, its partition label, kernel boot parameters and /etc/fstab are still correct. Also make sure that you have an empty /initrd directory on your root partition.
