Mplayer install issues on FC3

Hello. I would like to ask someone for a help, pls. I am trying to install Mplayer on my laptop. I am using a standard install of Fedora Core 3. When I execute:

# yum -y install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts

I get this response:

No Match for argument mplayer
No Match for argument mplayer-skins
No Match for argument mplayer-fonts

Also, I have to mention that I am new to YUM...

Thanks.

F.

Some suggestions on using yum to install MPlayer

I, too, am new to yum, but there is a great post on the basic in this forum--definitely take a look.

Are you running yum while su'ed to root? That may be your problem. Just as rpm often requires you to run as root to install packages, I think yum must as well--depending on what directories the installation tried to write to.

You can check what you do have installed by executing the following command:

yum -y search mplayer

It should show you what packages you have installed with mplayer in the name. Perhaps you have none...but if the command runs successfully, it will test whether yum can create/access it's local repository of package information--something that will require root access.

If your yum -y install command still fails, another possibility is that you need to add additional servers to your /etc/yum.conf file for it to go to to find the mplayer packages you want. The other post I mentioned above suggests editing /etc/yum.conf to add the following additional sources:

[livna-stable]
name=Livna.org Fedora Compatible Packages (stable)
baseurl=http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/yum/stable
gpgcheck=1

[FedoraUS]
name=Fedora US $releasever - $basearch - Latest Packages
baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fedora/2/i386/SRPMS.os/

[newrpms.sunsite.dk]
name=Fedora Core 2 NewRPMS.sunsite.dk
baseurl=http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/apt/redhat/en/i386/fc2

[dag]
name=Dag RPM Repository for Fedora Core 2
baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/fedora/$releasever/en/$basearch/dag

[dries]
name=Extra Fedora rpms dries - $releasever - $basearch
baseurl=http://dries.studentenweb.org/yum/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/dries

I hope one of the above things (su root OR adding the additional package locations) helps!

MPlayer must not be in the repositories in your yum.conf file. MPlayer is available from the dag repository, so adding that to your yum.conf file should enable you to install MPlayer via yum. Just add the dag entry that mjbrej posted.

Well, the second post helped, I guess. Yum installed everything but complained about "public key not available". Is that ok? When I execute "mplayer" I get command not found. Am I missing something? Please help again...

You need to import the gpg keys of the yum repositories you are trying to install from (they usually have instructions on how to do this). You can also disable the gpg key check in /etc/yum.conf, by changing this line

gpgcheck=1

to

gpgcheck=0

look at fedorafaq.org, they have keys of most popular repos. It's a better idea to get those keys than disable they in yum.conf.
