modules/"kernel-version'/build is a link????

hello friends,

i recently migrated from Opensuse 10.2 to the new and i must admit amazing FC7. i havent used fedora is a while so i had a question about the kernel/build directory/file.

i was installing a driver (ipwraw-ng, for my POS intel 3945) and it failed to "make" because it said my /build/ directory was not present. i thought that was kinda odd so i took a look and sure enough it was just a link.(an encrypted one at that!) i tried to locate where it was linked to but alas no avail.

so i have two questions.....

1) where is my /lib/modules/kernel-version/build directory?
2) would it be wise to modify the installation of that driver to adapt to that change?
3) is there a way to unlock the link to the build location?

as of now my card works fine, but the Fedora 7 drivers does NOT support packet injection or monitor mode, so its useless. to make matters worse, this particular laptop does not have a PCMCIA card slot so i cannot buy a card that Fedora suppports with packet injection, and i'm not going to attempt to locate a dongle to do the work.

any help would be greatly appreciated. i will study this new version some since i just got it installed today and i will repost very soon if i solve the problem or find anything of value. just so it can be seen ill go ahead and post the shell output below.

thanks!!! Justin

[root@189 ipwraw-ng]# make
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.22.1-27.fc7/build M=/tmp/ipwraw-ng-2.0.0-10072007/ipwraw-ng modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.22.1-27.fc7/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2
[root@189 ipwraw-ng]#

You need to install the kernel headers, then that link will point to the right place

hey thanks!!

i think i had to do that very same thing about 2 years ago or so when i just started with FC5.

as it turned out, i had the headers installed, but i needed the Devel packages in place. the IPWRAW package installed without so much as even a slight mumble!
