Media Player for FC2?

I just installed Fedora Ccore 2 and have no way to listen to MP3's and or watch MPEG videos on my OS.

Can someone please recommend something I can install on Fedora?

Does Winamp work on Linux? Is there something that is favored among Linux users that will work with Fedora Core 2?

Go here and install this version of apt then install all the multimedia stuff you want:

http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/

Or go here and add their rpm repository:

http://rpm.livna.org/

Or here is a complete setup guide to FC2

http://fedoranews.org/contributors/c...iat/fc2_guide/

Also do a search of the forums here and you will find plenty of guidance.

mplayer can do MP3's and videos...but you'll fall in love with XMMS once you get it going...

FC2 should come with XMMS 1.2.10, all you need to do is download the xmms-mp3 RPM file (it will say it's for XMMS 1.2.8, but it still works).

check this sight out --> http://home.gagme.com/greg/linux/fc2-tips.php

There are oodles of threads on here about how to install MPlayer...it's kind of hard the first time, but gets easier each time. My words of wisdom:

1. download all the extra codecs, untar them, and create a directory /usr/local/lib/codecs and shove them all in there.

2. when you're ./configure your mplayer install be sure to

./configure --enable-gui

3. you have to download a "default" skin and font and place them in the right directories...then after you get it installed you'll need to type "gmplayer' to run the gui version.

these are just some points that i feel SHOULD BE STRESSED...good luck

1. Make sure you still have the original xmms that came with Fedora. (If you've messed around and installed a different xmms, get the Fedora .rpm back.)

2. Got to http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads.html and get the Fedora plugin for xmms .mp3. It's an .rpm

3. Install it, and play mp3's until your ears fall off.

3a. Think about the fact that .ogg is a superior format.

Please check a great media player named VLC.
It can play many different media formats including MP3, AVI, MPEG, DVD, VCD, etc.
Find it at http://www.videolan.org

I personally use it in my Fedora 2 and Windows XP machine (with different versions of course). It has the ability of opening partially downloaded files from P2P networks.

Good luck!

And then there is the easy way...

Take advantage of YUM. IMHO, it's one of the best aspects of Fedora.

You may however have to re-install YUM. In both of the instillations of FC2 I've performed, YUM didn't work quite right.

http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp....fr.noarch.rpm

save that link target to your home directory.

open your terminal window.

type “su” (without quotes) and when prompted, type in your root p/w.

type “rpm -e yum” to remove the default YUM install.

cd to your home directory.

type “rpm -i yum*.rpm” This will install the version of YUM that you just downloaded with the correct config file...

type “yum -y install mplayer” and/or “yum -y install xine”

Mplayer and Xine are pains in the butt to install by hand with all the odd dependencies, but YUM takes care of all of that for you. Painless install!!!!

p.s. you need to be connected to the internet to use YUM.
p.p.s. yes, XINE plays AVI's & MPG, as well as other formats. MPlayer is much the same.
