Major Headache with Fedora 2 to 3 Upgrade using U2date
Hi guys,
Tried to use Up2date to upgrade and comes back with errors advising such & such a file needs xyz for a whole host of apps. When I try to download using rpmfind or RHN in Webmin and try to install it says they are already installed, so why the dependancy errors.
Also tried upgrading using webmin and that fails.
Also, I have tried running yum update but after going off for about 40 miinutes processing dependancies it finally comes back and reports what is to be installed, then runs off on another check and processing dependancies. It has been doing this for an hour now nearly and seems to be processing the same dependancies over and over again. Finally, I get error missing dependancies. Anyone know why? and can i just upgrade using synaptic?
When you upgrade any operating system in place then if the upgrade fails to create a usuable system you are screwed. Instead of upgrading in place you should install the new system to a spare partition, move your settings to the new system, dual boot until the new system is stable, and then move your data to the new system.
I understand that not to be the case from the messages posted on here - you can upgrade to the latest version! I have managed to do some or most of it including the Fedora 3 kernel and KDE. There are just one or two dependancy problems and I have removed the apps that the dependancies relate to in order to upgrade everthing else and then will reinstall them as they are not system related and it's not that many. I have rebooted into the new kernel and everthing is fine so far. I was just wondering why I appear to be having a few problems yet everyone else seemed to just run yum upgrade and it worked fine for them.
I ran into similar problems when I upgrade from FC2 to FC3.
What I ened up doing is rpm -e --justdb on the conflicting packages. Probably not the best thing in the world to do, but the old files will probably get overwritten anyway.
So far so good, I upgraded the computer from FC2 to 3 a few weeks ago and no problems.
Thanks for the reply. I am down to the last 75 packages to be upgraded. The bulk of it has now been installed and appears okay. The ones that conflicted I have not upgraded but will try to on completion as they may then upgrade???? Who knows, it's confusing why one or two of them won't as they say they need such and such a package and that package is already installed. Guess I'll try to uninstall it and reinstall to see if that makes a difference. Thanks again.
Some packages require another package of a certian version number, which is why when you upgrade it, it will complain that the other package depends on it.
Go ahead and paste the dependincy erorrs here, and I'll see how what you can do to get around it.
Thanks for the offer of help but I've completed the upgrade. All sorted and running great. Just removed one or two apps requesting dependancies as they weren't critical system related files. Reinstalled them after everything else was updated and all okay. Thanks again.
