JDK 1.6.0 32-bit and 64-bit on Same System (FC6)?

This is in regards to the installation of Sun's JDK 1.6.0 on my Fedora Core 6 (x86_64) system.

I have downloaded and installed the 64-bit version JDK 1.6.0 from Sun's website (jdk-6-linux-amd64.rpm). The install went perfectly and I used "alternatives" to set that JDK/JVM to the default. However, since the 64-bit version does not include a Firefox plugin, I need also to install the 32-bit version. I have acquired the 32-bit distribution of JDK 1.6.0 (jdk-6-linux-i586.rpm); however, when I attempted to install it, I got various messages about files conflicting with the JDK that I just installed. It appears that the default file locations are identical for both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

Is there a way to get these two packages to coexist peacefully on my system?

(BTW -- In case you're wondering why I don't just use the 32-bit version and ditch the 64-bit install: I use Eclipse to develop applications with the 64-bit version of the JDK. Eclipse croaks when I point it at a 32-bit JDK, so uninstalling the 64-bit version is not an option.)

Thanks!

You do not need both jdk's, just use the 32-bit with the 64-bit jdk;

$ rpm -qa --qf="%{n}-%{v}-%{r}.%{arch}\n" jdk jre
jre-1.6.0-fcs.i586
jdk-1.6.0-fcs.x86_64

FYI: the 32-bit jre does not work with 64-bit browsers, install the 32-bit version of the browser(s) firefox or seamonkey for examples.

<hits head> Good call, Leonard!

Yeah, luckily I've got the whole 32-bit Firefox on x86_64 figured out and am running a 32-bit browser nicely, so the plugin should hopefully be "automagical". If not, I'll just make a symlink to the plugin.

Thanks.

You will have to create the smylink, I like using a standard location (/usr/mozilla/plugins) myself, as it saves work when using multiple browers (firefox and seamonkey for example) and upgrading via rpm packages.

FYI: you might want to try out the firefox-2 rpm package from Fedora Development.

$ rpm -qa --qf="%{n}-%{v}-%{r}.%{arch}\n" firefox
firefox-2.0.0.1-3.fc7.i386

BTW you are welcome, glad to help

Thanks.[/QUOTE]
