problem solved
Well, as soon as I actually bothered opening my eyes and read the text at the bottom of the grub screen, I saw the "hit a to modify kernel parameters" section and tried that. noticing that one of the parameters was QUIET, I decided to remove that one, and after doing so, saw such a more interesting picture of what was going on when I booted in SMP mode.
Turns out it would actually get to a phrase i've seen before about Bad CRC and some other stuff regarding my hard drives. So I dove into my bios, disabled UDMA, and tried booting again. whaddayaknow, it worked just fine!
In case anyone's wondering, this was the Soyo Dragon P4I865PE plus motherboard, which runs beautifully well in FC2.
