httpd problem

i've searched old subjects and did not find a solution. I've searched the apache website and did not find a solution. I've posted on other forums without a reply, and I posted here a month ago with no reply. I am going to try again. I try to start the httpd service and get an error. it states:

(98)Address alread in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

[FAILED]

I've edited everywhere i'm told to make it listen on port 80, I see no reference anywhere on port 443 anywhere in the httpd.conf file, so I dont know why it is referencing this port. I'm not asking someone to hold my hand, but at least lead me in the direction to rectify this problem, it's been over a month and I still have not found a solution to this and it is frustrating at best, I'm really trying.

Can someone please PLEASE give me some ideas? I'm running Fedora Core 1

httpd.conf loads (includes) ssl.conf by default

It sounds like your httpd.conf file is including the ssl.conf file when it's loading, which it will do by default if mod_ssl is available.

Note the lines from the httpd.conf file:
------------------

<IfDefine SSL>
LoadModule ssl_module modules/mod_ssl.so
</IfDefine>

------------------

Within the ssl.conf file, check for uncommented lines that read:
------------------

Listen 0.0.0.0:443

------------------

If you find such a line, comment it out.

Otherwise, this would tell Apache to listen on this IP address and port, which would result in the error message your getting.

Within the ssl.conf file, you'll find more info on the specific instances where this setting is used.
