Well, as you no doubt have realized, once you do a reinstall, you will overwrite any previous configuration work you've done, so it would not be unexpected to find that things do not work the way they did before. As a general comment, I'd suggest doing a reinstall only as a last resort.
Unfortunately, my expectation is that if your system is now totally hosed, then you don't really have much choice except to reinstall again. To address the original problem however, it sounds like you might have just messed up your fstab. As you probably know, if you edit fstab (or any file) the previous version of it will be saved as fstab~ If you realize you've made a mistake, you can restore the previous version of fstab simply by:

cp /etc/fstab~ /etc/fstab
