Today I saw myself (once again) involved in the battle of the desktop managers. Now, trust me, being a linux noob Ive tried every window manager under the sun (that I could install on FC3
). At first there was Gnome, being the default thingie. I explore the it deeply and found its good and bad sides. Then there was Enlightenment, some boxes and whatnot. I hadnt tried KDE cause some users said KDE sucked in FC3. Then one day I decided, what the hell, lets see this monster, this resource hog, unstable monster that is KDE in FC3.
Hehehe... well hello KDE. Now, I dont know what you think (thats in part why Im writing here) but I am not a "hardcore" fan of any desktop. Is true that since I gave it a try Ive been using KDE. Does that mean I no longer use G-apps? No. I love gaim and I can't find anything better than Firestarter (yes Ive looked the options). But all things consider I love the way KDE looks and feels. So, here comes the problem.
As I said before I was reluctant to try KDE, cause again and again and again I heard nothing but trash on it (as I did once again today). Reports that it was unstable (as in crashing, buggy or not entirely functional) proved wrong in my computer. One thing that I found most surprising was the system resources thingie. A lot of people claim out there that KDE is a resource hog. Funny. While in Gnome I always looked with wonder my resource meters saying that my CPU was almost always busy even for the smallest things, and I always looked at my memory saying that only some 100megs or less were free to work with once Gnome was fully loaded.
Enter KDE. Fully loaded (lots of stuff on my systray, you name it, it was there) and I found myself with 70 something percent of my memory free (that is only about 100megs were being used). At work I saw my CPU really busy only in exceptional times (Firefox loading, compiling, extracting stuff). Buggy? Well, only app that gave me problems was amarok, dumped it for juk.
My point is, am I really lucky and I am probably the only FC3 user that loves KDE, or what? Id love to hear your experiences on this topic (thus the post).
