Fedora VS Mandrake 9.2

Well Im running Fedora 1 now , was running Mandrake 9.2 , and I must say that Im very impressed with Fedora1 , geez , Im now really hanging out for Fedora2 ..

My system is Epox 8RDA3+ , Barton 2500 [ 2400mhz / 200FSB ] R9700pro , etc etc , and I must say that the Fedora instilation was painless ,

Im currently triple booting , Win2000pro , XPpro , Fedora , and no problems .

Yes yes yes , Bring on Fedora2 ..

I was going to try Mandrake 10 , but it looks like it was def released to early , to be anything but another Beta release ..

I have recently tried Fedora Core 1, Mandrake 10.0 community and Slackware 9.1. I must admit that I really like Slackware, but Fedora Core is awesome also. I am of the opinion that Mandrake 10.0 is the most buggy operating system that I have ever tried.

I cant wait for Fedora Core 2 also!

Hey guys: don't overlook the "Community Edition" tag on the end of the current Mandrake 10.0 release. Arguably, Mandrakesoft have really just extended their beta cycle that the first release of a new version (known as the "Community Edition") is an opportunity to further bug and feature test. The boxed product -- ie, Mandrake 10.0 Official -- isn't due for another month or two. So, in other words, if you don't feel game enough to trying Fedora Core 2 Test 1, don't try Mandrake 10.0 Community -- wait for the "Official" release, just like you're waiting for the Fedora Core 2 release.

Having said that, if you wan't Kernel 2.6 and KDE 3.2 and don't want to try upgrade your distro yourself, MDK 10.0 is the way to go. I've had a few hiccups here and there, but, by and large, there have been no show-stoppers. It works fine as an everyday distro, imo.

Still, I'm interested to see where Fedora Core 2 takes us!

Im on FC1 now also.. i like it better than mandrake 9.2 but im in a draw between mdk10.0 comunity and FC1.

all three distros have a similar directory structure but ive found that i got more applications to work properly on FC1.

I think MDK was originally created as an improved version of redhat ( the same is true of ALT linux) and thus had a release schedule that followed redhat's very closely. I think it stands to reason that both distros would have the same file structure and packages from one might be usable in another. I think Mandrake has a really good thing going with 10 (community release) and mdk users should be really proud.

One thing that drove me away from Mandrake 10 was a buggy printer issue with my HP Office Jet. It printed just fine and worked perfectly when I needed it to but whenever I would open or close certain programs in MDK10 the printer would load a sheet of paper and print a strange character at the top and spit it out. I went through about 10 sheets of paper a day and could never figure out when or what triggered it.

MDK 9.2 never worked right with the printer either, it would print 3 pages , cut it off and quit printing. I played with it for weeks but finally went to Fedora and it has performed flawlessly. I have now decided to bounce all other distros and stop the endless distro shuffle. I like Fedora, its easy to understand and isn't as top heavy as MDK seems to be.

Once I figured out how to fix the problem with Fedora locking my cdrom all the time, I was set. That was the only problem I ever had with Fedora and it took all of 10 seconds to fix.

Interestingly enough I recently downloaded both Fedora and Mandrake 9.2 I definetly had more success with the Fedora however from what I saw on Mandrake 9.2 both are very nice to use. Pitty about the buggy Radeon 9800 pro problem with X-windows ...

I installed Mandrake 9.2 a few weeks ago and thought it was very nice (trouble free installation, KDE packed with applications). It gave me some insignificant hardware fits; for example, my USB mouse (the scroll wheel did not work, etc), my DVD-ROM drive was not detected, and I found it difficult to update packages. I guess I should have researched the "urpmi" more thoroughly.

Last week, a friend of mine let me borrow his Fedora Core 1 installation CDs and I have been in heaven ever since. I learned how to use YUM and I applied all the updates ( I even upgraded to a newer kernel! ). By the way, my mouse works and all my drives are detected properly in Fedora from the very beginning.

I'm about to try a SuSE 9.0 live-evaluation bootable CD to see if it looks promising as well. I hear some people say that SuSE is known for its "lock-ups" though.

I can't wait to try Mandrake 10 final and Fedora Core 2. I am still relatively new to Linux so I can't speak of Slackware, Debian, Gentoo, etc.

Well I tried mandrake 10 community and it was the most stupid thing I've ever done.

I used to use mandrake all the time because it had such an easy way to "remote desktop" and I really need that on this campus. I installed fedora core 1 a while ago after not using linux for a while and loved it, but couldn't figure out for the life of me how to connect to it remotely. SO that's when I installed mandrake 10 community crap. My ethernet card didn't work, and the rest of it was really horrid looking. It was like I had left the girl of my dreams because she twirled her hair for some two cent std laden mistress who can't twirl her hair because she's bald.

That's just my $.02

Oh and I am really unimpressed with the fedora core2 test. I tried that after mandrake because I had to format anyway, and boy, they are throwing something good to the dogs. It works like windows95 out of the box.

mandrake vs fedora

Linux newbie here... my luck with fedora vs mandrake has been exactly the opposite as the posts here. Mandrake 10 community is running flawlessly on my system. This is after taking fedora off because it wouldn't boot! It kept locking up at the boot screen after multiple problems getting it installed in the first place. strange how an OS works great on one computer, but not on another. I did like the look of fedora but it didn't seem to like my system. Mandrake installed perfectly and is running stable with no issues... it found my HP office jet USB with no problem and it works perfectly. I may play with the next fedora release... anything is better than WINBLOWS!!!

I'm using Mandrake 9.2 and I truly love it....the installation was totally painless...everything went well....detection of sound card, hard disk drives, USB mouse, etc etc....but I must say that MDK does sometimes get hanged or frozen....atleast for me once in a month....

Anyway, I just finished downloading Fedora Core 1 ISO files from their FTP site...looking forward to install it soon! I'm wondering what apps does Fedora KDE come bundled with?
I found that MDK's KDE has a lot of apps

How different is Fedora Core from RH9? Is it the same?

Also, wondering when Fedora Core 2 would be released. I dont want to burn my CDs now and within a few weeks find a new version out there! *sigh* this happened already with Mandrake...i downloaded 9.2 and the next week 10.0 Community was released. But, I guess this is ok because a lot of ppl seem to be having problems installing MDK 10.0

Fedora Core 2 is now at its testing stages. If you want, you can download FC2-test isos and try them out.

Does Fedora Core 1 come with OpenOffice.org or do I need to download it separately after installing Fedora?
