Angry Fedora Core 2 and the Internet....

Well, I posted this thread in the newbie forum as well... Maybe I'll actually get a response here in the Fedora forum.

Here's my problem: I recently installed fedora core 2. I have checked to make sure all network settings are correct, and they are. I can sort of get online. I can access some websites' homepage, but normally can't go any further than that. It's mildly distressing, and frustrating.. I don't know what I should do... can someone help?

Could you provide some more information? What sites are you able to access? Do other internet applications (e-mail, instant messaging, etc.) work? When you say you "can't go any further than that," what exactly do you mean?

sorry. I haven't tried any other internet-based programs. I also haven't gone to many websites, just the ones that matter to me. Can't connect to hotmail, google, the download section of mozilla.org so I can get Firefox, I can't complete a search from Ask.com, and other than that I haven't tried much. I can ping sites just fine, my IP information is as it should be, and I can access the internet fine in XP, which is what I'm using atm. Any ideas?

That's strange. What kind of message (if any) do you get when you attempt to access these sites? Try checking the security settings of the browser itself, maybe they are set too high. Also, check the fedora firewall in the main menu -> system settings -> security level. Maybe one of the trusted services/devices will work, although this is just a guess.

well, the error I get is simply a timeout error, because it can't connect. I checked firewall settings, and enabled both my NIC, and HTTP. I have switched to my fedora partition and am currently running in it. I can browse this site pretty well, just extremely slow for DSL. As for the browser settings, I left those as default, and they dont look too restrictive.. I have tried other programs too now, I tried to connect to my MSN messenger account with GAIM, and it timed out also... I dont know what else to do man......

How much memory do you have in your linux box. Linux likes memory, the more the better. With 128 MB my Fedora and Mandrake box's slow down on the internet after a few pages. Swap file is slow. Adding another 128MB fixes the problem. You won't have the machine constantly writing-reading from swap.

Also Mozilla is a bit slow and clunky. On my PIII 850 Mozilla is still slow

In Konqueror if you disable the reporting of Browser type in its config which is located at
settimgs/configureKonqueror/Browser identification
pages will load faster. I think Konqueror is a good little Browser.

I put Firefox on old celeron 400's and PII's and it is slick and fast. If you can get it, it'll make you smile.

That's some things that I have found.

well, at 512MB Dual-Channel DDR, I'm pretty sure I've got that covered... RAM hasn't been too much of a problem lately... Just installed the KDE apps and desktop environment, and am currently using Konqueror.. Works a lot better so far! Let's see what I can't do after class this morning!

Thanks for all your help guys, I'm sure I'll be coming back with more!

Maybe your DNS entries are not entered or are incorrect for some reason? I assume that since you can browse some sites fine, and not others, that your NIC is recognized, and configured. Have you tried entering ip addresses of sites instead of their domain names?

Y'know, I just logged on to report that I got it all working correctly.. Yes, it was my DNS. Something I never would have thought of in a million years, because the only time I had to think about that was when we installed Solaris 9 in my UNIX class... Solaris is a crappy version of UNIX man, I swear... Never thought the DNS thing would happen to me, but it did... Everything works fine as far as I can tell now... Jeez I feel dumb.....

Anyway, thanks everybody!

OMG.. how can you say that solaris is crappy??? Is it just because it's not a user-friendly workstation?? I admit CDE is a little hard for newbie to get right off the bat... but man... calling Solaris a crappy version UNIX is just plain rude... As it is the #1 UNIX distrobutionin the country...

I dont know, maybe because my class installed it in the same way, on the same day, and we all had about 75 different errors on each machine. 28 students, loads of errors that didn't match the errors with the student next to them. Oh yeah, we also have the same exact machines in the classroom... Wasn't a fun start to the quarter. Since then, we've had to re-install and re-image about 8 times. Not what I'd call a great OS.
