I've been using Fedora 14 since my conversion to Linux - and it has been brilliant. It allowed me to experiment, yet remained stable enough (with the help of some very expert people on this forum) to do my normal tasks. I upgraded to F 15, and what a disappointment. Evolution mail doesn't work in any sensible manner, red light error messages appear with every logon, and all in all, I regard this as a downgrade, rather than the reverse.
Is this to be expected of every release, with problems being corrected as they occur, or is F 15 just a dud?
My system (AMD am3 quad core 3.4, terabytes of storage, 8 gig of memory, nvidia gts 450 vidio, no overclocking) has been able to cope with everything I've thrown at it so far) is not, as far as I can see, the problem. Installation was from a downloaded ISO, which checked out as correct.
Is anyone else having similar problems, or do I go back to F 14?
Am I doing something wrong? Any comments would be helpful.
I completely agree. I just did a completely fresh install of Fedora 15 just to see what the issue was. First, I did one small change with vsftpd - I added listen_port=adifferentport to my configuration file. For some reason, vsftpd won't recognize that syntax on Fedora 15.
I also rebooted a few times and the system would turn off - I'd get a graphical interface (I have the system set to boot into runlevel3) and then it would hang and die. I'd try the LiveCD and check /var/log/messages and nothing.
Of course, you also probably saw my search results, so I had issues with fstab, systemctl, grub, and well, everything that I actually need for my server install of Fedora 15.
I used to trust Fedora -- I've been using it since Red Hat -- but wow, as I've said in my previous posts, it seems to have been rolled out haphazardly with no actual testing.
I'm actually in the process of downgrading to Fedora 14 via fresh install; about 300 packages remain but I'm more confident. It's a REAL bummer that Fedora 14 is highest I'll ever go; I always liked upgrading!
well fedora is a research and development ( R&D) fast paste distro
so what do you expect .
the same was said back in fedora 6 with pulse-audio ( fedora was the first to use the still beta pulse)
many programs broke
many soundcards stopped working
but after a few new versions most of the pulse bugs are gone
Gnome 3 is VERY different
upgrading most of the time dose not work well in fedora -- a very well documented issue .
Doing a 100% fresh new install is the recommended way to install a new version .Though "preupgrade" dose a fairly good job now ( after fedora 11,12,13,14,now 15 )
So this IS WHAT YOU GET if you are going to use fedora .
LIVE WITH IT !!!!!
Don't get me wrong i like fedora but it is NOT for every one , never was .
I have to upgrade a system from Fedora 13 (because support stops in a few weeks).
I tried Fedora 15. not fully satisfied, mainly because Gnome 3 is not really ready yet.
I'll probably go to Fedora 14 instead, and wait for Fedora 16 to go to Gnome 3.

Guess you didn't read my comments where I said that a fresh install was a total mess for me as well.
I've already replied to one of punts whinges about F15. It prodded me to (pre-)upgrade F14 to F15.
I like it. A UI is just an interface to me - I spend a lot of my time in the CLI; I can live with Gnome 3. No real issues otherwise.
All this complaining reminds me of my first foray into RH9. It was such a bitch I swore off Redhat/Fedora until F12 - when I wanted to test the crash system, and the debug kernels were handy in Fedora.
Plenty of other distros out there, but F15 looks o.k. so far.

I actually don't care about the UI. I do everything via CLI via SSH anyhow. However, none of it seems to work. That is probably a good reason to move back down...
The posts at fedoraforum are a 50/50 spilt between love it and hate it. Fedora (like Ubuntu) has had bad versions in the past, but this is a particularly poor one, and not just because Gnome 3 was released too soon. I've used Fedora since version 1, but 14 will be the last for me.
There are plenty of distros that work:
CentOS, Debian, Salix for high stability
Mandriva, Mepis, Mint, PCLinuxOS for greater currency

I must be lucky. This was the easiest Fedora ever to install. Everything works. The graphical problems I was having with Fedora 14 but not with Fedora 13 are gone. Installed new (not upgrade) Fedora 15 on my laptop using a purchased DVD 32bit disk. Then I did a system update (140+ updates). I was up and running quickly. Gnome 3 working great, did have to study Gnome help files and learn how to use it correctly. I got the hang of Gnome 3 quickly and I like it. Long time redhat/Fedora user.
(Gnome 3: use Windows Key, Alt+tab, Alt+tab+tab..., move cursor to upper left corner, Alt +Suspend button, window 1/2 size= Alt + left click+drag to left or right, double click window top to toggle size, Drag small window to top to max, etc.)
tktim you are not "lucky" that is fairly normal
I used fedora from fedora 4
4 installed just fine ,so did 5
6 - a sound issue i had to fix
7 applied the same sound fix from 6 for the sound
8 no problems
9 same
10 - skipped
11 no real issues
Now i am NOT including the normal everyday fedora problems - do to fedora's nature .
-- example
the issues with building software when gcc4.1 was introduced
the issues with building software when gcc4.3 was introduced
the issues with building software when gcc4.5 was introduced
the issues with building software when png14 was added ( true 12 was still in the repos )
deprecated code in very new versions of programs installed in fedora ( too new versions on *.so's )
Distribution: Ubuntu 11.4,DD-WRT micro plus ssh,lfs-6.6,Fedora 15,Fedora 16

Rep:
i havn't had any problems with fedora 15, but then again i use WindowMaker and have been since redhat 6.2 (originally i used KDE, but chose WindowMaker and have stuck with it ever since)
well, ok i DID have a problem on my old dell with the proprietary nvidia driver, but then again that's just a case of old hardware and i DID have a couple hiccups with upstart vs systemd after a live upgrade, but then again, that was because i did a live upgrade which isn't the preferred method.
otherwise fedora has provided me with more functionality i have wanted then i got with Ubuntu (rpmfusion has a better selection then i could ever find for with ubuntu's repos, better support for ncurses mode in aalib etc...)
the short of it is none of the problems i had were fedora's fault
That would, IMO, be a bit HUGE of a jump. YOu're going from an absolute newest stuff that's designed as a guinee pig to a enterprise level (read, stable and outdated) distro.
I'd suggest something like OpenSuse current, Debian testing, Arch, first personally. NOt as outdated as CentOS packages, but a lot more stable than Fedora.
Not sure the disto is that bad. Seems to require a very good system. Old clunker ones will puke along with servers it seems.
True
I have a old DELL from 2000/2001 that ran fedora 11 but the gforce 2 card was getting hard to support with new kernels and drivers
it was getting VERY slow with fedora 8 until i upped the ram from 512 meg to 1 gig ( dell added "for free" an extra 256meg at time of sale )
OpenSUSE 11.2 - almost ran with 1 gig on that .
By "almost" i mean it took 15 sec to open up my home folder from the desktop then about 15 sec for EVERY FOLDER
so fedora 15 on a old box ?? not a good mix
Arch works or SL6
