fc6 - software updater - conflicts between attempted installs

greetings,

I upgraded from fc5 to fc6 and then tried to run software updater. I get the following error message:

file /usr/lib/libpostproc.so.51.1.0 conflicts between attempted installs of ffmpeg-libs-0.4.9-0.34.20070204.lvn6 and ffmpeg-libpostproc-0.4.9-0.8.20070109.fc6'.(6,'/usr/lib/libpostproc.so.51.1.0',06))

I ran apt-get check (which I haven't truly used yet and just installed) - it reported uninstallable items but nothing related to ffmpeg

I interpret this as meaning that I have two different installations of the ffmpeg utility or at least the library mentioned and that software updater can't resolve this conflict.

My question - should I remove one entry from software updater and retry, remove both application installs and do a fresh yum install, or simply unselect the two conflicting entries from updater and try again ? Will any of these ideas break other apps? ideas?

UPDATE - I unselected the two entries for ffmpeg within software updater, but the run still complains - I suspect these libraries are used by other apps as well.

I also attempted to locate the two offending libraries as well as applications but could only locate the fc5 library. Any help here?

YET ANOTHER UPDATE - it seems that the lvn6 version is not installed, but software updater is attempting to install it. I removed the livna repository entries and re-ran updater, but now it shows missing dependencies for other libraries (xine libs in this case), so I suspect it is a repository issue now - that the livna repository is showing an identical package that ends up in the original conflict. I'm tempted to just remove ffmpeg totally to see if I still get the conflict.

tnx much - john

So disable the third party repo lvn or disable the FC updates and try again. It is a well known fact that keeping third party repos enabled all the time is a bad idea. Sometimes third party repos are in direct conflict with the main repo for the OS.

Thanks Lenard,

Yes, it seems that removing the offending third party repos can result in getting the upgrades that I wanted. However, the whole process seems to reveal that software updater is flawed in dealing with conflicts.

I did a cycle of apt-get (check, update, upgrade) which took a long time but yielded better results in obtaining upgrades and spitting out useful info for me, so I suspect I will stick with that process.

tnx, john

No the softer updater is fine.

Many third party repos do not follow the same package standards as the fine folks at Fedora Core, a difference in what package version is best always causes conflict. While third party packages are useful and desired in some cases they are not always built using the standard Fedora Core package versions. Some like rpmforge and freshrpms try very hard to be 100% binary compatible with the Red Hat /Fedora Core releases, others do not.
