FC3 Freezes up after time....

I have been running FC3 for about 2 weeks now and it runs fine when I am physically at the computer and using it. As soon as I leave for more than about 45 min, it freezes up and the srceen locks up and I cant move the mouse etc. Nothing responds. I have turned off the screensaver, power settings, etc. to try and fix this problem, but I have NO IDEA what is causing this. My GKrell=M still seems to clock the current time and amount of time I have been logged in, but nothing else is moving or responding... Does anyone else have this problem with FC3? My kernel is the basic 2.6.9 one that comes with FC3. If I need to provide more info, let me know..... Thanks in advance

i am totally new at all of this, so this will be my first stab at trying to answer someone's question

my computer was doing the exact same thing for about the first two weeks

after 40 minutes or so, the computer would freeze, lock up, i used to have to reboot

but i found out that my problem was in my bios, my settings for shutdown, sleep and so forth

since i changed my bios settings, i can leave the computer on all night and in the morning, its still wide awake

soon i will venture into using the screensaver, hope i answered your concerns, otherwise there are many here who will help you

How do you edit the BIOS features and which ones do I need to change specifically... I am really new to all of this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I had the same problem, and today I've disabled two services called "readahead", to prevent them from starting at the startup of the computer.

This services are said to load programs into memory when the computer boots to improve the perfomance. But, in my case, I don't have too much memory, so my computer froze after a while; although I had plenty of swap memory free...

Now I see much more memory available, (using the command 'free') and it looks better. I recommend you to try this.

Well I have 1Gb of memory, so I dont know if that is going to solve the problem.... But I can try that out, right now I am willing to try anything! Could you tell me how you disabled those features, I am still kinda new to linux and FC3.
Thanks, Charles

it may not seem connected, but what kind of video card do you have, because this sounds like the nvidia "screen frozen but mouse still moves" issue.

I have a ATI Raedon X300 video card. And the mouse doesnt move at all either... So basically it just completely freezes and there is nothing I can do except do a hard power reset. Is there a command in linux similar to ctrl alt delete in windows that I can use to maybe try and get kill command or something along those lines? Also is there a log that I can check to see what programs were running when it freezes to try and troubleshoot and get even a tiny idea of what it could be?
Thanks, Charles

my computer froze a couple of times, i did a power-shutdown, and then i got a filesystem check that was checking over a thousand files and still nothing worked

so i had to reinstall fedora core 3 about three times just due to freeze-ups and then corrupted filesystems

but then i learned about ctrl-alt backspace (kills the x-system) and ctrl-alt F1 (goes to login screen)

but ctrl-alt-delete did absolutely nothing for me

you see? thats my limitations, i dont know exactly what i did, but there was a choice within the bios that gave me the option of power-save or something, i just disabled it, and that was the end of that

(hopefully i didnt screw up anything, but so far so good)
