I've just installed a dual boot (WinXP and FC2) on my fathers computer.
To avoid the mbr problem, I started with "linux hda=C,H,S".
It did the the trick with windows, but doesn't work itself.
If I use any GUI in X, it just freezes at random times.
The only logic part is changing screensavers, it always freezes when I do that.
On Google, I only found similar problems with laptops (this is a normal intel system).
Does anyone has any idea what could cause this...?

Oh well... off to find another distro.
Peace...
That's lame. If you give up that easy, how will you troubleshoot more difficult problems?
Perhaps it's your video card? I had a problem using a cheap AGP card once and it would do just what you describe. If I worked from a console, it would not give me any issues.
Why not list your system specs in a followup posting so everyone will have a better idea what the problem might be?

The way I've been troubleshooting problems I've encountered with Linux over the past 3 or 4 years I've been using it.
Usually, I don't use any of the distros app installation or system admin tools as I feel they just get in the way. This time around, I decided to try actually using them and I've been getting more frustrated than I've ever been with previous Linux use. You can read my thread about upgrading to MySQL 4.0.20 on FC2, which I ended up doing from source due to all the dependency crap (including circular dependencies) involved with the RPM route.
I don't actually "need" GUI access to this box so after I settled down I figured I would just revert back to the way I've done things in the past so I can get the box configured and up and running rather than "fight" the GUI elements. I imagine it would run just fine without X and once I get everything setup I planned on not running X anyway.

The reason I didn't post any specs previously was due to frustration and lack of interest in doing things the "Fedora" way, using the GUI tools supplied with the distro. I'm a Slackware guy and used to building, installing, and configuring from the command line and I'm finding that to be easier than dealing with installing binaries from RPMs. The box is a PII 333 MHz w/ 256 MB of RAM and #9 Motion FX 771 video card. The funny thing is, I had RedHat 9 up and running on the same hardware without problems, X and all, and for some reason FC2's X server is just a bit too "temperamental". If another distro would spare me this grief, I would definitely switch to it.
Hi jens. I had the same problem. This is what I did.
First, I started the "Screensaver Properties" program and then very quickly disabled the screensaver. I also avoided the emacs program like the plague.
Then I used up2date to update my whole system. After that I enabled my screensaver (my favorite happens to be sphere. I find it to be a little more central-nervous system "friendly" than some of the others). I haven't tried any others since the updates yet. I have opened emacs since then and it doesn't freeze my computer any more. So far, everything is working a whole lot better since I got the updates. At least if a program gives me trouble now, I can at least close it. I can't say for sure what the actual cause of this nonsense was, but I bet that it was the X updates that actually cured the problem (maybe GNOME updates).
Anyway, my romance with FC2 is back again. Good luck. Ed.

Originally posted by legolin i know that FC uses another X (at least the config files are named diferent: xorg.conf) in RH9 there where another files in /etc/X11/ ...
FC2 uses Xorg 6.1.7 (I believe, but some recent/fairly current version of Xorg) where RH9 used XFree86. The thing is my hang seems to happen when I move the mouse to the far right-side of the screen. It's like the mouse pointer goes off into "la-la land" and disappears completely and everything else just locks up.
We'll see how it runs in non-GUI mode, which will be its primary config anyway.
