Like previous posts have said, you can change to any runlevel you desire by typing (as root) 'telinit #'. do a 'telinit 3', install your nvidia drivers, than 'telinit 5' to get back to X. NO NEED TO REBOOT. come on folks, this isn't windows.

PS: I prefer to add myself to the sudoers file like so: "<user_name> ALL=(ALL) ALL"; that way I can just do 'sudo telinit 3'.
A most usefull post. I hate to mention that naughty word (MS) on here. I knew I didn't have to reboot, but that hammer was looking better and better. Goggle really wasn't helping either LOL.

I know there are more options. Its just finding them!!! Thanks

I tried the method of changing the X86config file first then installing the driver after, when X wouldnt be able to load.
Um... but now the computer gets stuck on the startup at "Configuring Kernel Parameters"

So i changed the X86config file, now it wont boot up... actualy its called xorg.conf maybe i did something wrong, and how would i fix this.

What I did was rename the directory, boot, name it back. Do the install and then reboot it. It was quite normal after that.

1. did a "mv /etc/X11 /etc/X11_bak"
2. reboot
3. "mv /etc/X11_bak /etc/X11"
4. Install the drivers
5. startx should work
