FC2 Dual Boot Problem

I have a SATA drive(MAXTOR120GB) and PATA(WD40GB)@Primary Master.

BIOS boot sequence is set PATA first.

Currently I installed FC2 on PATA 40GB and grub loads FC2 fine(everything runs great), however if I choose XP boot option it just freezes...

but if I change boot sequence to SATA first then XP loads fine but of course it completely ignore the existence of FC2/grub...

I am just wondering how should I config it properly so grub work the way it suppose to? here is a listing.

Thank You

I don't think it's the partition table problem. Windows XP still boots fine if I adjust my boot sequence to look for the SATA drive first. No data loss. Maybe grub is not pointing to the right drive for XP..I dunno.

Here is my grub.conf. I have Windows XP installed on the primary harddrive on the first partition(hd0,0). Then I have FC2 installed on the second harddrive on the first partition(hd1,0).

#boot=/dev/hda
default=1
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd1,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora Core (2.6.6)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.6 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb
initrd /initrd-2.6.6.img
title Fedora Core (2.6.5-1.358)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb
initrd /initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
title Windows XP Professional
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

Did you install FC2 & Windows XP in the same hard drive? That's what it looks like from looking at your grub.conf.

You may have to figure out what OS is in what drive then change your root (hdx,x)

I change grub to point to proper disk (hd1,0) but still won't load.

However I can still get into XP by change BIOS boot sequence(Win SATA drive first...then PATA linux drive), still searching for answers....

dual boot fedora core 2 XP

sfdisk will help you

This is where the application sfdisk comes to the rescue. Sfdisk can be very powerful in
non-interactive mode, it can output information that can be used as input
elsewhere, and it can accept data as input at run-time. This makes sfdisk
ideal for this solution because you can ask it to read the partition table
and deliver the result in a way that itself can write back when you tell it
to change your drive geometry. This makes the process fast and less prone
to human error as very few values need to be supplied. The solution can be
summed up in a single line with two commands:

sfdisk -d /dev/hda | sfdisk --no-reread --force -H255 /dev/hda

this worked for me

cheers
