Error messages while trying to install Fedora Core 5

Hi. im having issues trying to install Fedora Core 5 on my friends computer. While in the gui installer i was on the screen to choose the keyboard layout and got the following message.

Code:
error mounting file system on hda1: invalid argument
Prior to installing i loaded up knoppix and partitioned the drive with fdisk so that it had a partition with the linux 83 id and swap 82 id. Despite the error message the installer continues. Later on the screen where you choose the root password this message pops up.

Code:
Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. failure: repodata/repomd.xml from anaconda
Im not positive what either of these messages mean. I downloaded the isos from the fedora project page and burned them using k3b. We've had similar issues trying to install FC4 on the computer. Are these issue easily fixed or should we just hang up our fedoras? thanks for any replies in advance.

Hi

I have had similar issues when I had a corrupted download. Did you check the MD5 sums? Also, there is a media checker in the Anaconda installer. Try using that. The error that most suggests a corrupted download is the last one where the package information could not be read from the CD. If these are not downloaded CD's (i.e from a magazine), then it is possibly a hardware issue. If no hardware issues where found when Knoppix was loaded, then Fedora should install ok with good cd's.

Not much of an answer for you, I realize, but it is a starting point.

Bob
