Red face dial-up modem kppp and network device control

Hi all

I have installed an external dynalink modem on /dev/ttyS0 under Net Configuration and can activate it and get on the net with Network Device Control and clicking on Activate my PPP0 modem device under KDE.

I then added the two users on my computer to UUCP group and this enabled me to dial in as user with Network Device Control.

Next I want to use KPPP so it gives a windows like logon to dial up and gives the little info windows in the taskbar. Converts from windows so thats what they want I guess. This is where I get stuck.

My internet provider Ihug in New Zealand comes up when using wizard and installs all settings into logon script. Expect ogin: Send, etc. Modem queries correctly. I set it to show log and it sends ATZ I think it is and takes about 40 seconds for modem to dial before going through script, which again takes ages before just stopping with garbage characters in log screen.

Are there any settings I should be looking at in particular. I am reading in my notes about removing Lock from the options file if I use KPPP for instance. It mmust be something small if I can dial in with Network Device Control or maybe I should be using another frontend?

I use gnomeppp on my laptop with Ubuntu and that seems to work good with wvdial. The rest of the family feel comfortable using that as it is similar to the windows dial up and not to much of a culture shock for them. They do seem to be taking a shine to KDE and Fedora though.

Thanks for any comments in regards to above

Cheers

Had a chance to have a bit more of testing with dialup interfaces etc.

Found a little program in Yumex called Knemo that when I set it up and activated my PPP0 device from Network Device control it popped up to say logged on and all the useful info in the taskbar just like the windows dialup. The trouble I had was if you closed the Network Device control window and tried to open it again to Deactivate PPP0 or my modem it would crash and leave the modem connected. I ended up running "/etc/rc6.d/K90network restart" in the command prompt to get it to stop the PPP0 and allow me to redial and try again. Am a newbie so using that command is probably wrong but it worked for me. I dont know what I have done but just before I went to work Network Device control wasnt crashing when it was closed and reopened.

Tryed alsorts of settings in KPPP but just called not get it to connect to ihug with the script. The modem would initialse properly but when it come to login and user name it would hang and sometimes get right through to password sending and fail. Gave up on KPPP after a couple of hours.

Decided to try Gnome PPP what I use on Ubuntu on my laptop. I had to add my ISP and ISP's DNS numbers to the /etc/resolv.conf file and also add a [Dialer Defaults] to /etc/wvdial.conf. I managaed to get it to dial in properly so I thought I was done except when I logged in as normal user and ran GnomePPP it said "no device /dev/ttyS0". I presume there was some permissions that weren't set properly. The user was added to UUCP group and /dev/ttyS0 was UUCP group so I dont know why this happened.

I disabled SELinux and this didnt help.

Went back to Network Device control and it dialed or activated PPP0 no problems as user. This seems to delete what I had in resolv.conf as when I went back to try GnomePPP it wouldn't connect and it looks like I will have to change the settings again.

In the end I went back to Network Device control with Knemo as my GUI info in taskbar.

Leant heaps, and also alot I still dont have a clue about what I have done while being and newbie fumbling around PPP config files.

Think I will leave it setup like that for now so I can setting other stuff upo in Fedora.
