Cannot find USB Drive

I was cleaning up after unsuccessfully trying to install a driver with ndiswrapper, and deleted the contents of my /root/desktop folder. Now I can't seem to get my Seagate USB pocket hard drive to appear on the desktop when I plug it in. I looked around some other forums trying to find an answer and one referenced a /etc/fstab directory, which I don't have. Any ideas?

wait one sec here, you don't have an /etc/fstab?

Tell me what this puts out

$cat /etc/fstab

$cat /etc/fstab gave me a permissions denied, and I am logged in as root. Just a regular cat /etc/fstab gave me a "Not A Directory"

No ideas? I guess my only option would be to reinstall then...
