Unhappy boot problem. after "INIT: version 2.85 booting: awk: fatal: Unmatched (

Hello everyone,

my fedora core 4 was working fine untill a few nights ago. Now when I turn on the computer it gives the following error right after it says

"INIT: version 2.85 booting"

it says

"awk: fatal: Unmatched ( or \(: /( <a whole bunch of crap>)"

and then :

"Setting default font (latarcyrheb-sun16): /bin/unicode_start: line 15: 510 Segmentation fault kbd_mode -u
loadkeys: error while loading shared libraries:"

then it keeps on displaying similar errors with a whole lot of Segmentation faults and error while loading shared libraries

it still boots all the way to the desktop but my hostname has changed to "none" and commands like "ls" don't work anymore. Also I can't switch to root as the password I had doesn't work anymore.

Please help, I installed quite a few things and I would like not to reinstall?

Thanks

Toeno

It sounds to me like you've corrupted your file system somehow. See if you can run the appropriate file system checks as they may be able to repair the file system without having to reinstall anything. Try
Code:
fsck -t fstype
where fstype is the type of your file system (ext2, ext3, reiserfs, etc.).

If you are unable to run these commands as well, you may want to boot using a LiveCD such as Knoppix that has this tool available for you.

Good Luck,
~Justin

Thanx a lot for the help!!

the fchk command was not known globally but when I changed to /sbin it worked. I then typed
"fsck -t ext2"
and it replied
"fsck 1.37 (21-Mar-2005)"

Do I have to do something else?

Thx,
Toeno
