Authentication failure

Hi guys,

I'm running 64 bit Fedora(23) and the problem is that when I type "su" in the terminal it asks me for the password, now this worked fine with me typing the root password that I have setup when I installed the Fedora on my desktop but yesterday when I did the same thing it gave me "authentication failure" message and wouldn't accept the root password anymore..

Has anyone had a same problem?

Also, I have the same setup running in the vm and exact same thing happened.

Thanks... I'm a newbie here and still kind of learning my way around with linux!

Hi & welcome to LQ.

I've never had that problem with Fedora.

If you continue to get authentication failure you can change the password if need be.

Never seen Linux do that. Dumb question but are you sure you typed in the correct password?

You can get around this by simply doing the following provided you are part of the wheel group:

Code:
sudo bash
Code:
 su -
Once there you can change your password for root.

Is there anyone else using your machine that may have changed the root password?

No, nobody else is using this machine except me, and I've been typing out password in plain text to make sure it's typed correctly... Anyways, I've changed the root password as suggested by Ztcoracat and lazydog and seems to be fine now.

Thanks guys, if I ever somehow find out what happend I will post it here, even if it's some stupid mistake by me

Cheers!
