Angry audacity and fedora core 3

Arg.
OK, here's the deal. I JUST want to record a tape from my stereo to the hard drive. That's all. It shouldn't be a drama but it is. Here's why

KREC doesn't record anything. full stop. I never got it to work, I have no idea why

AUDACITY: this is the really funny one. I had this working nicely on FC2. Now hat I have FC3, it won't work. I don't know and can't figure out whether it's because the removal of the "alsactrl" command (so I can't alsactrl store the settings in alsamixer) or something else.

I've tried the fix suggested on the audcaity home page related to the /dev/dsp link and I strongly suspect that it has completely knackered my audio. (Find it on the top of the page at http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.pl?LinuxIssues)

So, at the risk of sounding whingey and irate, the latter of which I definitely am, the former I'll let you decide...
1: can somebody please give me a step-by-step way to get either KRec or Audacity or some other package working to record on FC3. Preferably without the jargon
2: Can someboy please post a listing of /dev and how dsp is shown in it so I can try to return to the default setting.

I'll willingly supply any info required. As a starter, the soundcard is an onboard version on an Abit NF7-M motherboard - soundcard is AC 97 codec according to the manual.

Thank you! Regretfully I'm now off to boot up windows because, even though the recorder on it is horribly poor quality, it actually records.

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth and viewing of similar problems on the new in various forums, installed new nvidia nforce2 drivers from the nvidia website, set the input in audacity to stereo and hey presto, works perfectly.

Blood pressure slowly returning to normal...
