2.6.* Kernel for Fedora Core 1

I am running Fedora Core 1 and I've read that the 2.6 kernel works better for laptops. I went to a few sites and most of them have outdated links and all suggest that I go to Fedora Core 2. I don't really want to do that I like Fedora Core 1 it suits my needs but after looking at the fixes of the 2.6 kernel on the fix log I see that it is something that I should upgrade. My question is simple where do I get the tarballs for teh 2.6 kernel for Fedora Core 1? And a nice tutorial link to teach me about what I need to do. Thankyou

A Fedora Core 2 kernel will probably run on your system.. I'll find a link for you.

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...s/Fedora/RPMS/
or
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...pdates/2/i386/

the first contains the release kernel of fedora core 2, the second contains newer kernels. I suggest going with a 2.6.7 kernel from the latter directory.

(pick a package called "kernel-2.6.x")

It's worth a try - it might work!

Regards,

Samsara

Ok I got the kernel 2.6.7.

I got both the smb and the regular kernal.

Problems:

2.6.7-smb boots through all the way until it gets to freeing unused kernel memory: 175kb freed.

That is where everything stops I dont get any further response.

plain kernel 2.6.7 boots through until it gets to freeing unused kernel memory :140kb freed.

That is where that one stops.

I got the right rpms for my system i686. When i boot the older 2.4.* kernel it frees 135kb of unused kernel memory. I am probably wrong but I think if I lowered the amount of memory for the 2.6.7 kernel to free it would boot ok. What do you think. Is there a way to do that?
thankyou
