You are currently logged in as "Unknown". Gnome

I am facing lots of problems with log in and log off Gnome. System some times goes to the console prompt instead of X. I notice this message when I try to logout:
You are currently logged in as "Unknown".
I am sure that I logged in as normal user name and the menu shows the correct user name next to the logout option. I have reinstalled GDM and logon packages, but no success. Any suggestion?

Solved.

I added my user name to /etc/passwd as follows:
knoppix:x:1000:1000:knoppix:/home/knoppix:/bin/bash
