The Debian way is to use: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86. Hope this works for you.

The other way is to modify your "XF86config" file by hand..

Normally youŽll find it in /etc/X11/

Hope this helps...

I was having similar problems and I ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 with much success. The only difficult part is knowing your hardware, such as your video card and monitor specs. A google search for your monitor will probably tell you what you need to know.

good luck.
