X works great in Ubuntu, won't start in Debian

I've got Kubuntu 6.06 installed on one partition and I'm doing an install of Debian Sarge on another. KDE and X of course work great under Kubuntu, and they were automatically set up for me during the install. In sarge I've installed the packages x-window-system-core and kde. However I cannot get X to start for the life of me using startx. I always get the error
Code:
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
From what I understand, this means that /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 doesn't contain the correct driver for my card. (an integrated intel i810 somethingorother) However whether I select the i810 or vga driver in the configurator (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86), X will not start and I always get the same error message. I've tried renaming the xorg.conf file that Kubuntu created as XF86Config-4 and using that, but I always get the same thing. Perhaps someone can help? I was kind of reluctant to post this because I know this is rather common sort of thing but whatever I try I can't do it.

Thanks in advance, here are some files which may be useful:

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Code:
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

What does lsmod say about your i810? You are generally better of to install etch than Sarge if your hardware is at all new. Since Kubuntu is based on etch, I think the odds of etch working better are good.

Edit: fixed command ... said lspci when I meant lsmod

lsmod
Code:
Module Size Used by Not tainted
e100 48424 1
That's all it says.

I'll probably add the etch repositories to my sources.list later, but for now I'm using sarge to build a custom kernel for use with openMosix.

(This is on an openMosix kernel that I built this morning....perhaps I wasn't generous enough with including drivers? If I compiled certain things as modules in the kernel, will they show up in lsmod?)

Edit: startx doesn't work with the stock 2.6.8 kernel which came with debian either. Maybe it isn't my kernel's fault?

I don't know if e100 is a video module or not, but by your symptoms, I doubt it. If you're going to build your own kernel, you're beyond my ability to make reasonable suggestions.

I just tried changing the BusID but that didn't work either. Do we know if the kernel has to be compiled with DRI support for X to work? I've been leaving it out because it always causes it to fail the compile.

Pretty sure Kubuntu is based on sid. Maybe I'll give this a try anyway...

Edit: lspci recognizes it

Well, I changed my sources.list to include the testing sources and did an apt-get dist-upgrade. Now I can do startx and KDE actually starts. Maybe the old sarge didn't like the new hardware, and I am still running my old 2.4.26 mosix kernel. Thanks to those who helped.
