x-window in Debian

Hi ALL:

I've install the Debian 3.0 with the base system.
I've also selected the "X-window system" and the "Desktop environment".
After the installation and answering a number of questions, the machine
still does not start a x-window system. The monitor is flashing for a while
and then turn to the text mode.
However, I found the process "gdm" in the process list.

So, what's wrong with me?

From the terminal, run xf86config.

Choose the monitor options carefully here. Select the "vesa" as your video driver (most failsafe) and choose safe resolution like 800 * 600 at 75 Hz.

Then try running startx again. If it doesn't work again, make sure you have chosen the correct mouse device (/dev/psaux for PS2 mice).
