try the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 now

If configuration works, try starting X with the startx command

Nice to seee the PCI ID database update worked

Not to bed yet.. Was driving home from Work..

Puzzling why X still says no devices found..

Do you feel like being a bit more adventurous ? I would suggest installing Debian ETCH it does a better job of device detection and the software in Etch is newer.. Even though etch is currently the 'testing' branch of Debian it is very stable and actually will be the stable branch in a couple months..

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/da...86-netinst.iso

you can even try out the new graphical installer if you like. After you boot the netinstall CD type installgui at the boot: prompt. Otherwise it will do the standard text based install.

Etch will give you a newer Kernel (2.6.17 instead of the 2.4.27 default of Debian 3.1), better hardware detection, more device drivers with better support, newer versions of most programs, Xorg instead of xfree86 and quite a few other changes/improvements. you can view the differences in package versions at Distrowatch

Since you are just starting out with Debian this might not be a bad move for you.

Even if we still run into some issues with your graphics The fix will still be pretty much the same.

I'm not sure exactly what you are explaining is happening .. Is the system turning itself off ?

If you boot the system normally, wit for the blank screen then use CTRL+ALT+F2 do you get to a terminal login ? once you are at that point you can login and fix the minor configuration issues for X..

OK what is happening is that you are booting the machine and X is starting but the settings are wrong.

When you press the power button at that point it initiates a shutdown and stops the X server from running then you see the console again as it is stopping the rest of the services and turning the machine off.

So you are Close to success here.. you really are

Boot the machine and wait till the screen goes black.
Hit CTRL+ALT+F2 which should switch you to a console and give you a login prompt.

Log Into the machine as root so we can edit some things.

There are two ways to proceed from here... You can either run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and run through the configuration wizard a few times till you get it working right.. or you can edit the file manually for a bit more control.

vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf

There are a few things to check in this file.. I have highlighted them in my sample configuration. This config is from an old workstation I have, don't use the settings in this file these are only for example..

1. Check the Monitor Section to make sure the Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates MATCH the Specifications of your Monitor or LCD

2. Check to make sure the proper driver is selected in the Device Section. probably ati for you, or you can use vesa for testing.. the vesa driver is very basic and is probably not what you want to use in the long run but it usually will work if the specific driver for your card doesn't

3. in the Screen Section, check the Resolutions for your Display.

Code:
IBM-300GL-1:/etc/X11# cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

When you have verified everything there is correct, save the changes in the editor and exit it.
Then
hit CTRL+ALT+F7 which should switch you back to the Blank screen.
hit CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE which should shut down X and cause it to restart. if everything in the config filke is correct you should have Graphics at this point.

Not real familiar with the others, Once I found Debian, I liked it more than the others so I quit using them a long time ago..

.. anything in the top 10 on Distrowatch should be fine. Suse would be a good choice..
