Why grub prompt after installing Grub inder Debian woody 3.0r2?

I have Debian woody 3.0 r2, and also I have Windows XP and Windows ME. I had LILO Loader and I put "apt-get install grub" to install a new boot loader i.e GRUB. But after installing it Iam getting only the grub prompt instead of GRUB menu. WHy? How to load my Debian and Windows back?

boot your machine with the recue disk.
then type:
~# update-grub
This should search and find your installed linux kernel(s)
then you can boot back to your linux
if there is no option for WinXP when you reboot, then further editing of /boot/grub/menu.lst will be necesary.
